Watch the film and find out more about Nigel's job as a
strategic regeneration communications manager in a local
council.
"My name is Nigel Adams. My job title is Strategic Regeneration
Communications Manager, which is a mouthful; what it basically
means is I'm responsible for the communications around what's
happening in three big regeneration areas of Lewisham.
Communications is quite an interesting job in the sense that you
need to know everything really, you need to become a bit of a mini
specialist in all sorts of subjects. The job I'm doing now,
regeneration, is something I know nothing about. It involves things
like; town planning, transport policies all of this stuff is
something I never ever expected I would need to/have to learn. But
actually it's been quite enjoyable for me, it's been a new
challenge, it's enabled me to take a skill that I've got, an
experience that I've got, all the communication stuff but give it a
different spin. So I'm actually working with people to try and make
this stuff happen. On the other side of the fence, working with
local people and trying to get them to buy in with what's happening
and help them understand what's happening, and also to work with
them to enable them to feed their ideas into the process as
well.
I think from a very early age I was very interested in writing,
because I loved reading when I was younger, and it was just
something I was good at and something I enjoyed doing. For me it's
a great way being able to communicate with people far and wide,
people you will never necessarily get to meet face to face.
If I could, I think I would, love to be in the media, that's
something that I'd love to do still. I'm not actively pursuing
that, things have just kind of happened to me and I'm happy to go
with that and learn different skills and have different experiences
on the way, but actually, yes, if one day I ended up doing the sort
of job I'm doing now but actually in the media, that would be
fantastic."
