Introduction
Web Technicians are information and technology specialists who are
focused on the development of websites. The job would usually
involve working as part of a design and communications team.
Work Environment
The work takes place mainly in an office.
Daily Activities
Duties could include:
- generating design ideas and provide innovative solutions to all
clients;
- creating and maintaining accessible, bilingual, original,
engaging, accurate, and usable design solutions;
- the production from concept to artwork of publicity for the
council. Including posters, flyers, leaflets, reports, booklets,
banners, large format displays, exhibitions and point of sale
products together with web and other medium formats;
- taking briefs from clients, challenging and developing briefs
in a constructive manner;
- managing own workload and prioritising workload to meet
client's deadlines;
- continually keep up to date with the latest industry standard
software and operating systems (e.g. Dreamweaver, Flash, Quark
Xpress, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. Mac OS X ) and look
for any new alternative software packages;
- maximise the use of software's creative potential by
continually learning to develop new skills and techniques;
- maintaining up to date records of work progress on all design
jobs. Ensuring all paperwork is kept with files e.g. final
proofs, quotes and orders relating to project for filing after job
is completed;
- ensuring projects comply with statutory and internal guidelines
and policies particularly with the following: Corporate and
Partnership organisation policies and design standards, Welsh
Language Policy and Equality and Human Rights Commission and RNIB
checklist.
Skills & Interests
A Web Technician will have:
- good visual awareness and an eye for detail;
- creativity;
- communication and presentation skills;
- ability to work in an Apple Mac and PC environment;
- interpersonal skills;
- ICT literacy;
- the ability to project manage;
- influencing and negotiating skills;
- the ability to deliver tangible and accurate results within
tight deadlines;
- a knowledge of internet coding languages used for both
presentation and layout of web/new media.
Entry Requirements
Web Technicians may require basic educational
qualifications. They may also be graduates in graphic design
and may have other specific multimedia design qualifications.
A number of UK colleges offer relevant courses at all levels.
Future Prospects & Opportunities
Progression may be possible within two to three years as you
develop a reputation and build a network of contacts. In
general, career development may depend on job movement to widen
experience and develop your portfolio. Opportunities will
vary depending on the size of the organisation.
