Case study
Local Studies Supervisor, Karen
Karen, Local Studies Supervisor
Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council
I first worked for Trafford Council as a library assistant
before transferring to the local studies section, first as an
assistant, then as local studies supervisor.
My role involes the following tasks: general running of Trafford
local studies (in the absence of the local studies librarian);
supervising staff; preparing timetables; training local studies
library assistants; creating and using databases for archive and
stock listings; selecting and ordering supplies; banking cash and
processing invoices; archiving new material and calendaring
existing archive stock; researching and monitoring enquiries;
checking and monitoring photograph orders; assisting the local
studies librarian with the classification of photographs and other
stock; publishing promotional literature; stocktaking (annually);
inputting books onto the TALIS computer system; repair and
conservation of materials.
I really love my job and like everything about it, but it can be
quite a challenge; the environment is always changing, which
requires me to continually learn new skills.
The council has supported me through a great deal of training
including: interviewing skills; discipline and grievance
procedures; manual handling; basic archive skills awareness; CALM
database. Plus I've also gained the European Computer Driving
Licence (ECDL).
