Case study

Clerical Assistant, Laura

Laura, Clerical Assistant
Metropolitan Borough of Wirral

After doing a two-week work experience placement at Knowsley Council, I decided I would like to work for the council after my GCSEs. I was successful in applying for an Apprenticeship at Wirral Council in the Personnel and Policy department and gained an NVQ level 2 in Business Administration. As well as having GCSEs, the qualities I needed when applying for the job were enthusiasm and reliability. I applied for the job as I wanted to do an Apprenticeship in a large organisation and thought this would be an ideal opportunity for me to work and gain qualifications.

I now work in the recruitment administration team as a clerical assistant. My duties include dealing with enquiries from the public, sending out application packs, writing job adverts for newspapers, inputting application form data into the computer and producing and sending out letters and contracts of employment. I am now also studying for an Advanced Apprenticeship including an NVQ level 3 in business administration.

The people I work with are great. I also really like dealing with the public and helping them with their enquiries about employment within the council. I hope in future I will be able to progress within the council and continue to gain more qualifications.
