Development Officer in a local council
Sue's interview
Video Transcript
My name is Sue Wink and I'm a Young People and Children's
Services Development Officer - that's a posh title for a person in
charge of children's libraries.
I think young people will absolutely adore working in a library,
it isn't the traditional "Ssh, be quiet." It offers absolutely
anybody a range of different careers. As long as they think "Ooh
I'm all right working with people." Think of librarianship, because
that's the key to everything.
I always wanted to be a teacher, I remember going home one day
from school and saying to my mum, "I don't want to be a teacher
anymore." So she said, "What on earth are you going to do?" So I
said, "I heard there's a job in the library."
When I went for my interview I evidently said the right thing
because they said, "Why do you want to be a librarian?" and I said,
"Because I like people."
I set up a house-bound library service and we went to prison
libraries and mental hospitals. It was interesting to say the very,
very least. At one of the mental hospitals I went into I was
actually stabbed, but you're probably going edit that out!
I've no regrets about the career path that I took; I think it
was absolutely the right one for me. To end my career, which I will
be doing in this post, is the very best thing. I do know when I
leave in a few months time; I'm not going to be very happy, I shall
be very sad and you'll get me crying again so don't! Stop it!
