Case study

Systems Administrator, Alex

Alex, Systems Administrator
Kent County Council

"I started working for Kent County Council on the Kent Success Apprenticeship Programme. My work placement was in a small friendly office, where I acted as the administrative support for a team of four. Having an ambition to work in a business enviroment I was happy to be given the opportunity to prove myself, and in the ten months I was on the programme I was supported and pushed to develop all the time.

As my apprenticeship came to an end, I applied for every relevant job that came up in the council, and with my newly acquired NVQ Level 2 in business and administration, I found further employment in a few weeks.

In my current position I work within children's social services as a systems administrator, preparing a new piece of web-based software for implementation, which will help map qualifications, training and development opportunities. My typical day consists of contacting colleges, universities and training companies explaining my role, and my need for information on the courses and qualifications they offer . I collect this information and enter it into my database. I then send the information back to the provider to have it approved for publication on the website, which is due to go live soon.

I've always had a big interest in ICT Systems, and to be working on a project such as this is really interesting. Another thing I knew I wanted in my next job whilst studying for my NVQ was a job with an on-going responsibility, such as a long term project that I can watch take shape and see through until the end. I am really enjoying getting stuck into this project and anticipating the end result makes my job worthwhile.

The most challenging thing about my job has been keeping on top of everything, remembering who I have contacted when, who I need to call back and who is going to call me back, and what I need to be doing all of the time to keep the project moving forward. The job challenges me everyday, but at the end of a working day when you can go home and know everything is under control (for the time being!) it is well worth it.

In future I would really like to stay in ICT related work, and I will definitely stay in the County Council. My aim now is to work towards ICT project management."
