Case study
Senior Planning Officer, Jonathan
Jonathan, Senior Planning Officer, Broadland District
Council
"I originally joined the council as part of a youth trainee
scheme. I had just finished school and was unsure of what I wanted
to do with my life, but was certain that A-Levels or a full-time
college course were not for me. The council's training scheme
offered me experience in different departments and day release to
complete administrative qualifications. I spent most of my time in
the planning department and really enjoyed the work.
After completing the trainee scheme, I took up a temporary
position in the administration and validation section of the
planning department, as they were keen to retain my skills and
offer me further development. I eventually gained a permanent
position as an administration assistant and was also offered the
opportunity to study a BTEC National Certificate in Public
Administration via day release.
After four years, I was promoted to planning technician in the
forward planning section, which is focused more on future
development within the district. This gave me experience of another
aspect of planning, and broadened my knowledge and opportunities.
Whilst in this role, I was offered further support and development
from the council to study for a degree and postgraduate diploma in
Town Planning.
I have now progressed to a senior planning role and am still
receiving great training and development opportunities - I'm now
studying for a Chartered Certificate in Management Practice. The
council is an excellent employer providing support in career
development. The work environment and morale within the planning
team makes it enjoyable to come to work each day.
Planning is a versatile career with many opportunities. It is
very rewarding to physically see the impact your work has on the
built environment and it is interesting to travel around the
district having direct contact with the public."
