Case study
Senior Accountant, Faisal
Faisal, Senior Accountant
London Borough of Haringey
"I first started working at the London Borough of Haringey on
their graduate training scheme, which consisted of various
placements across finance. The scheme was second to none, with
excellent opportunities to learn new skills, gain new experiences
and network with a wide range of people. I really strengthened my
interpersonal skills and broadened my knowledge of local government
finance.
After the graduate scheme, I was successfully appointed as
Senior Accountant within the corporate finance department. At
first, the work was so overwhelming, compared to the graduate
scheme, it felt like I was running the country! It was a real
culture shock, but I think I adapted. My main responsibilities were
to keep abreast of any changing/new legislation that would have
financial impact on the council. This means there is a lot of
reading.
The best thing about the job is the learning opportunities it
offers. I live to learn. Education never stops. Contrary to most
accounting jobs where tasks are more or less the same, month after
month, year after year, my job deals with changing legislation,
implementing new policies/initiatives. Its never the same! There's
always something new to read or learn about, which is very
refreshing.
The next step in my career is to work towards becoming a finance
manager and it is my ambition to one day become one of the youngest
finance directors in London."
