Jackie's interview

Video transcript

My name's Jackie Auborn and I am a PCV driver for Lewisham Council - it's a bus river basically, or a coach driver. I've got a license to drive big vehicles. My job involves picking up elderly people, young people with disabilities that can't use London transport. I really do enjoy the job; otherwise I wouldn't have been doing it so long. I enjoy helping people and it's quite rewarding in that way, makes you feel like you done something good.

I've been with the council for 17 years, and I started as a 'meals on wheels' driver, when my children were young, just at weekends. Then it has just progressed, then I was an attendant and then I started driving a car, just taking children to school in Sevenoaks and then a minibus and then a PCV driver, which they put me through.

I wanted to better myself really, because I know now that one of my biggest regrets is not working harder at school. One of my daughters now, I don't know if it's the same for me, but she's dyslexic. Obviously I knew she had a problem and I followed it up and my daughter was helped all through her school. She had one-to-one help with her teacher. She was given so many hours a week, you know, on her own; it helped her, and gave her the confidence. I think I was just put at the back of the class and I thought I was thick basically; but I think I probably needed help in school but never got it.
