Case study
Mechanical Services Engineer, Andrew
Andrew, Mechanical Services Engineer
Wakefield Metropolitan District Council
When I saw the position of mechanical services engineer
advertised in my local newspaper, it seemed as though it had really
good prospects. The advert asked for 5 GCSEs including English,
maths and science and offered great training opportunities.
My role involves surveying domestic properties, pricing up jobs,
ordering materials, designing small domestic central heating
systems, producing final accounts and tendering for some of the
bigger, commercial jobs.
The most challenging thing about the job is that often,
everything seems to come at once and there is not necessarily a
steady flow of work. I really like that challenge though, and enjoy
meeting new people.
I have received a great deal of training whilst working for the
council. I have done both NVQ levels 2 and 3 in Heating and
Ventillation and am now working towards an ONC in Building
Services. In future, I would like to further my studies and gain an
HNC in Building Services.
