Case study

Housing Officer, Kathryn

Kathryn, Housing Officer
Norwich City Council

I started my career in the police and whilst I was there, I became interested in the provision of mental health services. I became aware that if people had the correct accommodation and a good support network they could turn their lives around.

I decided I wanted to work in housing and applied for an administrative position within the housing department at the council. I was successful and after a few months was promoted to the position of housing officer.

My role involves dealing with all tenancy management issues, from repairs, to neighbour nuisance and anti social behaviour. To do the job you need to be good with people, a methodical worker and be able to multi-task.

Although it can be hard work dealing with tenants and contractors, I really enjoy working with people and like being able to take the initiative and plan my work myself.

I have taken various training courses relating to housing and am currently studying for a certificate in housing management. In future, I would like to make it to senior housing officer.
