Deputy Library Manager - Enquiry Services, Mark

Mark, Deputy Library Manager - Enquiry Services
Peterborough City Council

After spending 22 years in the Army as a Senior Welfare Worker, I am now working for Peterborough Libraries - a service provided by Peterborough City Council. I manage 12 library officers and 2 librarians who provide an enquiry service enabling members of the public visiting the library to find the information they are looking for, both on the shelves and virtually via the internet.

Other responsibilities I have include: maintaining the library website; looking after the day-to-day operation of our 115 people's network computers spread across all the libraries in Peterborough; working on specific projects, such as helping Peterborough Libraries become the first in the country to provide automated booking and printing; and getting involved in partnership working.

I may not get a posting to Canada working for the council, as I did when I was in the Army, but I really enjoy working with the technology and the people. There is a great deal of variety and I have a lot of responsibility. I'm also able to use and build on a lot of the skills I gained in the Army such as: effective communication; making recommendations to senior managers; ensuring people are in the right place at the right time; and solving problems quickly and effectively.
